He attended Union Hill School District #3, a country school near his home. On September 25, 1940, he married Eloise Marie Ryan at her parents' home. The couple began their long partnership in farming on a small farm nearby. In 1948, they purchased a farm north of Brooklyn and resided there for nearly 50 years. They spent many happy winters in Mesa, Ariz., and later moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 1997. After their health began to fail, they moved to Mayflower in November 2000.

John was an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, the Order of the Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge #174, and Kiwanis Club, all in Brooklyn, and the Poweshiek County Cattlemen's Association. He enjoyed square dancing, singing and the neighborhood card parties. In his early years, he also enjoyed pitching many games of kittenball. Later, he enjoyed raising Tennessee Walking horses, pitching horseshoes and playing bocce ball.

Survivors include five daughters and their spouses, Joan and Mike Runyan of Albia, Anedra and Lowell Skeeter Sherwood of Brooklyn, Linda and John Ryal of Cedar Rapids, Renita and Doug Meredith of Suwanee, Ga., and Deanna and Bob Barnes, of Elkhorn, Neb., thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
