CHARLES NEWTON FUNERAL HELD

Charles Newton was born January 9, 1834, at Hardanger, near Bergen, Norway. He passed away Friday evening, March 13, 1931, following a short illness of pneumonia, at his home in San Diego, California. He was the last of a family of twelve children, and had reached the age of 97 years, 2 months, and 4 days.

In the spring of 1855, he came to Madison, Wisconsin. On November 12, 1860, he was married to Miss Rachel Marthina Olson in Primrose, Wisconsin. Ten children were born to this union three of which have passed on two in childhood and the late Mrs. Ellen O. Peterson, Ellsworth, Iowa, on September 15, 1930. Mr. and Mrs. Newton moved to Iowa in 1864 and settled on a farm southeast of Grinnell where they lived until they moved into town in 1893. Mrs. Newton passed away May 17, 1906.

Mr. Newton with his daughter, Lucy, moved to California in 1909 where he resided until his death. He is survived by six daughters and one son. They are Misses Lucy S. and Lenna O. Newton and Mrs. Rachel M. Traggardh of San Diego, California, Mr. Thomas L. Newton, Modesto, California, Mrs. Anna C. Meland, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, Mrs. Josephine G. Shahan, Des Moines, Iowa, and Mrs. Clara E. Iverson, Grinnell, Iowa. There are twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Newton was converted in 1871. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in San Diego. He peacefully fell asleep and we have the assurance that he has gone to his heavenly home.

A funeral service was held in San Diego Wednesday afternoon, March 18. Miss Lucy Newton arrived with her father's remains in Grinnell Saturday morning. Funeral services were held at the Iver Iverson home, 2:00 p.m., and at the Ebenezer Lutheran church 3:00 p.m., Monday, March 28, conducted by Rev. A. Meland, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, and Rev. S.M. Stenby, Clear Lake, Iowa. The funeral sermon text which was that of Mr. Newton's choice is found in Amos 4:12.

Mrs. A.B. Cadwell and Mrs. Roscoe Dempster sang two selections, "Saved By Grace" and"Asleep In Jesus" with Mr. Henry Engen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, at the piano.

Pallbearers were Thomas A. Newton, John L. Newton, Frank Black, Ommund Pedersen, Bert Tokle, and William P. Sparks.

Interment was in the family lot in Hazelwood cemetery.

Meland, Rochester, Minnesota, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Engen, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Rev. S.M. Stenby, Clear Lake, Iowa, Mr. Lewis Larson, Mr. Ole Larson, Mr. Lloyd Larson, Sac City, Iowa, Mr. Peter O. Peterson, Ellsorth, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Shahan, Herbert Shahan, Mrs. Morgan Livingstone, Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Wilkinson, Chelsea, Iowa.
