HARRY A. NIECE

Harry A. Niece, 59, of 1704 Spring St., Grinnell, died Wednesday, May 11, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center of complications following surgery.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Mary' Catholic Church, with the Rev. Anthony G. Farrell officiating. Organist was Pat Shaw. Pallbearers were Everett Carpenter, Nick Fontas, Pete Guillaume, Robert Manly, David Mertens, Jack McCarty, Steve Tomlin and Dick Zobel. Honorary bearers were Clem Bodensteiner, Dean Douglas, Adam Guillaume, Harold Hanson, Jeff Phelps and Charles Wakely.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials in Mr. Niece's name may be made to the St. Mary's Catholic Church Religious Education Center or to the Oakland Acres Tree-Planting Program.

He was the son of Harry E. and Ruth M. Wooten Niece and was born Nov. 23, 1934, in Fort Madison. He was raised in Niota, Ill., and graduated from Nauvoo High School in 1952. He also attended Western Illinois University in Macomb.

On Jan. 21, 1956, he was married to Rose Marie Wilde at Macomb. They lived in Chicago where he worked at the Air Mail Field at Midway Airport. Mr. Niece transferred to Fort Madison in 1956 where he held a variety of postal positions. He was named postmaster of Grinnell in July 1976. His 16-year tenure was the longest on record for a Grinnell postmaster.

Following his retirement in 1992, he worked for Oakland Acres Golf Club.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the National Association of Postmasters in the United States.

Surviving are his wife, Rose; two sons, Michael of Alden and Kenneth of Earlham; four daughters, Kathy Wickamp of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Ann Baumann of Woodburn, Minn., Nancy Yando of Indianola and Laura Sherlock of Davison, Mich.; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Reed of Marble Falls, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents.
