OBITUARY.

Mrs. Mariette Towle Bartlett, wife of Mr. A.W. Bartlett and daughter of Rev. C.A. Towle, was taken sick with pneumonia on Monday of last week and died on Wednesday, the 18th, at 7 a.m. She was born in Sandwich, Illinois, March 27, 1872, and was 23 years, 11 months and 21 days old. The disease was violent in its attack and persistent in its progress, so that the most skillful treatment and painstaking attention did not conquer it. She bore it all with steadfast calmness and very peacefully passed away. Mrs. Bartlett was educated at the Ladies' Seminary at Rockford, Illinois, and at Iowa College. On account of the death of her mother, she was called to assume unusual responsibilities, for a young girl, as her father's housekeeper. She filled that place with remarkable success until her marriage, nearly two years ago. Her cheery ways filled that home with sunshine, as they did her new home since her marriage. Naturally her position in her father's family made her his adviser and companion, more than most daughters have to be. This fact intensified the ties of affection which bound them together, and makes the separation especially painful to him. She came to Grinnell in August, 1889, and has since made this city her home. She was married to Mr. A.W. Bartlett, June 21, 1894. In this new home relation, she was a happy, devoted wife and mother. She leaves a babe ten months old. The funeral took place this afternoon at two o'clock from the family residence on Broad Street, Rev. E.M. Vittum officiating. The pallbearers were George W. Cowden, Alfred Burroughs, E.L. Beard, E.R. Potter, S.J. Pooley, J.W. Rapson. A quartet of singers, Mrs. Vittum, Mrs. Mack, John C. Walker and Louis Westbrook, sang the appropriate hymns selected. Hon. J.P. Lyman conducted the funeral.
