Arthur Willard Barlett was born near Grinnell, Iowa, May 21, 1862 and passed away in Salem, Oregon, May 11, 1928.

He was of New England ancestry, his parents, Emery S. Bartlett being born in New Hampshire, the former at Bath, the latter at Monroe. The Bartlett genealogy is traced on direct line to 1066 when a scion of the family came to England with William the Conqueror and the "Bartelot" estate in Sussex County, England, still remains intact. One of the ancestors, Josiah Bartlett was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

His parents moved to Grinnell in 1859 where they shared in the pioneer life of the little New England colony. It was here that Arthur Bartlett was born and fulfilled the ambition of his parents by graduating from the public school and later in the class of 1888 from Grinnell College, then known as Iowa College. Following his graduation he engaged in the grocery business for a number of years and later in the banking business until he removed to Oregon in 1910. Their first home was Grants Pass, where Mrs. Bartlett's son, Arthur V. Dunn had preceded them. Here a disastrous fire destroyed their home and in 1915 attracted by the beauty of the Willamette Valley, they purchased and moved to their present home, Oakland Fields, near Salem.

Mr. Bartlett was married three times. His first wife, Catharine V. Burroughs passed away upon the birth of their only child, Paul Burroughs Bartlett. To his marriage with Marietta Towle, one son was born, Emery Augustus Bartlett, who early enlisted with the Marines in the World War, and gave his life in the service of his country at Chateau Thierry, in June 1918.

To Mr. Bartlett's marriage with Pearl Burroughs Dunn, one son was born, Willard Stephen Bartlett, who after special study at Corvallis, has remained as his father's partner on the farm. Upon coming to Oakland Fields, the Bartlett family interested themselves in the community life and to all that contributed to its betterment. The Church, the School, the Grange, in all of these, they were actively interested. In early life, Mr. Bartlett united with the Congregational Church, and upon removal to Oregon, the family transferred their membership to the land of their adoption.

Such, in brief, is the life story of one of nature's noblemen, but the continuing influence of such a life cannot be measured. He was a man of Christian faith, of unquestioned integrity, and a high sense of honor. His innate kindliness, and interest in the welfare of others, was quickly recognized, and he was a man whom, having once met, it was not difficult to keep in mind. A man of many friends, it may be truly said that he never lost one. The community in which he was a recognized factor, will greatly miss is quiet helpfulness and the world is poorer for the loss of such a man.

Mr. Bartlett is survived by the wife who, for thirty years has been a true help mate, sharing with him the deeper experiences which come with the passing of the years; by his son, Professor Paul B. Bartlett, of Huron College, South Dakota, and by his son Willard S. Bartlett, who has been his constant companion during these later years; by two sisters, Miss Stella T. Bartlett of Pomona, California, and Mrs. T.O. Douglass, of Tempe, Arizona. He also enjoyed the unusual devotion of Mrs. Bartlett's two sons, Dr. E.L. Dunn of La Grange, Ill., and Dr. Arthur W. Dunn of Sacramento, California.

His grandchildren are: Mary Catherine, Stephen and Barbara Bartlett, and Jean Constance Dunn.
