VIRGIL DOUD

Virgil L. Doud, 71, 407 Sixth Avenue, died Friday morning June 9, at Friendship Manor Nursing Home where he had been a resident since last summer.

Services were held Monday June 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the Grinnell First Baptist Church, with Rev. Robert C. Smith of the First Baptist Church, Knoxville, officiating along with Rev. Kenneth Wallace of the Newburg United Church of Christ. Burial was at Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials in Mr. Doud's name may be left at the Smith Funeral Home.

The son of Peter Perry and Hazel Clarice Howard Doud, he was born August 4, 1917 on a farm southwest of Grinnell. He attended rural schools and graduated in 1936 from Newburg High School.

He married Doris Arlene Rhoads on September 1, 1940 in Grinnell. The couple farmed in the Rock Creek Township of Jasper County until 1948 at which time they moved to Grinnell. He was in the real estate and insurance business until 1954, then he began his 25 year career as a bulk tank operator with the Skelly Oil Co. In recent years he returned to operating a real estate business.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Victor Grange, and had served on the Grinnell City Council.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; daughter Judy Sears of Gilman; son John of Grinnell; two sisters, Dorothy E. Olson of Grinnell and Doris H. Flanagan of Kellogg; and four grandchildren.
