LETTIE BERRY RITES FRIDAY

Mrs. Lettie Berry, 76, the wife of George W. Berry, Rte. 2, Ewart, died Tuesay evening at Skiff Memorial Hospital in Newton.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Brownlie, she was born March 15, 1896, in Long Grove, Scott County, Iowa. She attended the Grinnell public schools.

On April 2, 1919, she was married to George W. Berry at her uncle's home in Madison Township, Poweshiek County. The couple had six children: Mrs. Orville (Harriet) Hafkey of Rte. 3, Grinnell; George C. Berry of Davis, Calif.; Gene H. Berry of Grinnell; Mrs. Murl (Marjorie) Hatfield of Rte. 3, Newton; and Joyce Ann and Lettie Louise Berry, who died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Berry made their home at 416 West St., Grinnell following their marriage. Mr.Berry was in business as a blacksmith and welder. In 1943, they moved to Dexter, Iowa, and in 1948 to Ewart, where they had lived since. Mrs. Berry was admitted to a Newton nursing home in September of 1972.

Survivors include her husband; her four children; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her twin, Mrs. Ralph (Lottie) Simmons of Mt. Ayr. She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters; one grandson; her sisters Mrs. Neva Bein, Mrs. Rena Millard and Alva Brownlie, and her brothers Charles and Elmer Brownlie.

Funeral services for Mrs. Berry will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Horace O. Schaffner, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Township Cemetery, Ewart.
