RICHARD SEARS

Richard M. Sears, 78, of Rte. 3, Grinnell, died of a stroke Friday Oct. 30, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Grinnell Christian Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Wallace, pastor of the Chester United Church of Christ, officiating. Organist was Nancy Sears, and vocalist was Shannon Hayes.

Pallbearers were Doug Brown, Rick Brenner, Dave Connon, Chris Gage, Brent Schlenker, Karl Schlenker and Wes Schlenker. Burial was in Chester Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Chester Church or the Grinnell Rotary Scholarship Fund.

The son of Myron and Edith Palmer Sears, he was born June 28, 1914, in Chester Township. He attended rural school and graduated from Newburg High School in 1931.

He was married to Lola Kathryn Baustian Dec. 29, 1935, near Malcom. The couple farmed in Chester Township where Mr. Sears bred Ayrshire cattle. He was also a retired auctioneer.

He was a member of the Chester United Church of Christ, past president of the Grinnell Rotary Club and the Poweshiek County Farm Bureau, a member of the board of directors of the Poweshiek Water Association and a member of the state and national Ayrshire Breeders Association. He and Mrs. Sears were honorary lifetime members of the Iowa Ayrshire Breeders Association.

Surviving are one son, Larry of Malcom; two daughters, Marilyn Schlenker Barnes of Madison, Wis., and Glenda Bradshaw of Ames; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one brother, George of LeRoy, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Margaret Case; and two brothers; Adelbert and Howard.
