GENEVIEVE "GEN" VANNOY, 88

Genevieve "Gen" Vannoy, 88 of Montezuma, died Saturday, June 27, 2009, as a result of a broken heart just six months after the passing of her husband of 71 years, Waldo.

Genevieve Helen Vannoy, daughter of Otis and Lillian (Campbell) Lindsey, was born Oct. 27, 1920, in Jefferson City, Mo. She attended Ottumwa High School. On June 1, 1937, she was united in marriage to Waldo Vannoy in Ottumwa. To this union two children were born, Phillip Dewey Vannoy and Sharon Ilene Vannoy Chalup. In 1956, Waldo and Gen purchased the Chevrolet dealership in Montezuma, which still uses the Vannoy name under the current owner, Doug Vermeer. Gen enjoyed cooking, knitting, and crocheting for her family. She loved to spend time with her family, and especially her husband, Waldo. Gen was a member of the Montezuma First Presbyterian Church and the Montezuma Garden Club.

Gen's memory is honored by her daughter, Sharon Chalup of West Des Moines; her sister, Sylvia Grooms of Ottumwa; a brother, Bernard (Judy) Lindsey of Newton; four grandchildren; Scott (Carole) Vannoy, Mike (Peg Rossi) Shoafstall, Dr. Steven (Samia Shalabi) Vannoy, and Angie (Travis) Daniels; eleven great-grandchildren: Alan Beck, Catie (Joe) Carr, Heather, David (Nicole), Carlene, Cameron, Jackson and Clarisse Vannoy, Gracie Daniels, Cody Van and Siera Rossi; five great-great-grandchildren; Wyatt and Raegan Vannoy, Parker Creech, Skyler and Jayden Beck.

Gen is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Waldo on Dec. 23, 2008; a son, Phillip; a brother, Delmar Lindsey; and son-in-law, Claire Chalup.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 1, at the First Presbyterian Church in Montezuma. Burial will be in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation of Des Moines or the Grinnell Regional Hospice.
