PEARL J. POE, 72

Pearl J. Poe, 72, of Montezuma died suddenly on Wednesday morning, August 13, 1997, at Bainbridge, Georgia.

Funeral services were on Saturday, August 16, 1997 at the Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma. Officiating the service was Pastor Boyd Sparks of Montezuma. Mr. Boyd Sparks and Mr. Arvin DeRoef were soloists, and Mr. Kathleen Ramsey was the organist. Casket Bearers were John Shultz, Lyle Roorda, Russell Cox, Mike Danner, Matt Roorda, and Lynn Baustian. Honorary Casket Bears were Floyd Little, Chuck Wengert, Eugene Merck, Paul Rose, M.O. Hansen, Russell Wiley, Laverne Grier, Mike Ammann, and Richard Olson. Military Graveside Rites were members of V.F.W. Post No. 8876, Blakely-Stevens American Legion Post No. 169. Interment was at the Masonic-IOOF Cemetery in Montezuma.

Pearl was born December 28, 1924, at University Park, Iowa, the son of Pearl P. and M yrtle (Brown) Poe. Pearl attended school at Lovilia and Eddyville. He worked for Palmer Brothers before entering the service. Pearl served in the Army from Sept. 7, 1944 until June 29, 1946, in the 7th Armored Infantry Battalion, 8th Armored Division.

On July 26, 1947, he was united in marriage with Helen Gasper at the Catholic Rectory in Ottumwa. They made their home in Springfield, Ill.; Washington, Ia.; and Oskaloosa before moving to a farm north of Montezuma in 1951. Pearl farmed and later owned and operated Poe Antenna and Appliance in Montezuma. He loved working for Stadiums, and most recently with his son in Poe Construction. Pearl had just finished installing a stadium press box in Bainbridge when he suffered a massive heart attack.

Pearl was a member of Midway Grange No. 219 since 1951 and was also a member of V.F.W. Post No. 8876 of Montezuma.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, LeRoy Poe.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son and his wife, Carl and Joe Poe of Montezuma; a daughter and her husband, Gayle and David Lacasse of Center Harbor, New Hampshire; six grandchildren, Scot Patterson, Jeramy Poe, B.J. Poe, Josh Lacasse, Kyle Lacasse and Riley Elizabeth Lacasse; five great grandchildren, Ryan, Kourtney, DeLane, Jena and Delana Patterson, three sisters, Elsie Morrow of Kirksville, Missouri; Ethel Curtis of Promise City; and Mary Thompson of Carthage, MO; three brothers, James Poe of Kansas City, Kansas; Winfield Poe of Shoals, Indiana; and Melvin Poe of Carthage, Missouri; and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Stadium Press Box at Montezuma Community High School.
