Vaughn Story services today

Vaughn E. Story, 65, of Unionville, Mo., formerly of Poweshiek and Tama counties, died Thursday morning of an apparent stroke at his home.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home east side facility, with the Rev. Hugh Shiveley, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner, and vocalist will be Margaret Taylor. Pallbearers will be Robert Baird, John Griffin, Harry McNaul, John McNaul, Howard Sinclair, and Gary Story. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Aaron and Lela Story, he was born Feb. 19, 1913, in Putnam County, Mo. He attended rural schools. As a teenager he worked in the coal mines, later moving to Iowa and working on various farms. He moved to Poweshiek County in the 1930s.

On Aug. 3, 1935, he was married to Lodema Griffin at Malcom. The couple farmed in the Malcom, Grinnell and Montour areas. After his wife's death in 1970 he moved to Unionville. He was married to Ethel Dorsett at Cincinnati, Iowa, on March 4, 1975.

Mr. Story was formerly a member of the Tama Odd Fellows Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Robert Story of rural Grinnell; his step-children, Lloyd Dorsett of Washington state, Mrs. Wanda Walsh of Nebraska, Mrs. Ronnie Cowan of Texas, Elmer Dorsett of Washington, and Mrs. Carol Fulcher and Mrs. Donna Conger, both of Iowa; six grandchildren; 25 step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister, Mrs. Russell (Olive) Sinclair of Indianola. He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; one brother, Earl; and two sisters, Mrs. Erma Duncan and Mrs. Verna Purkeypile.
