OBITUARY
Samuel George Rowe, son of Samuel and Phebe Rowe, was born in Lynne Regis, Dorsetshire, England, Nov. 28th, 1868. He came to America in 1888 to join his brother Robert, who came to this country the year before. He spent one year near Brooklyn, Iowa, then he came to Grinnell where he has since resided.
He was united in marriage to Miss Matilda Evans Sept. 19, 1893, by the Rev. G.E. Farr, at that time pastor of the First Baptist church at Grinnell. One daughter was born to them, Esther May, now six years old. He was a devoted husband and father, always faithful to the interests of his home and family.
He united with the First Baptist church in Grinnell several years ago and has lived a consistent christian life and died trusting in the Savior, with firm hopes of a home in heaven. As a friend he was kind, helpful and true. His genialty and good nature made him always welcome among a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, who will miss him.
In his business relations he was square and upright and had the entire confidence of all those who knew him. For the last few years he has given his attention to the buying and shipping of livestock and was well known among the farmers of the surrounding country. He possessed a strong body and an iron constitution and although he had the best medical attendance and skillful nursing, with all the kindly ministrations that loving hands could give, that terrible disease, typhoid fever, proved fatal. He died at 2 p.m. Oct. 1, 1901.
He leaves, beside his wife and daughter in this city, his parents, three brothers and a sister, Walter J., Fred W., and Mrs. Fanny Cox, all of Bridport, England, and R.C. Rowe of Iowa City, who was present during the last week of his illness.
The funeral was held Oct. 2nd at 2:30 p.m. After a short service at the home the remains were borne to the Baptist church, where a large number of his friends had gathererd to pay their tribute of respect to his memory and to the bereaved family. The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. G.E. Morphy. At the close of the services the remains were borne to Hazelwood cemetery and there laid to rest to await the Resurrection Day.
