GEORGE GAUSS
George "Eldred" Gauss, 83, of Grinnell died Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Homer Perry officiating. Burial was in the veterans section of Hazelwood Cemetery.
The son of George C. and Alta M. Williams Gauss, he was born Aug. 2, 1914, in Byron, Minn. His family later moved to the Wapello area, and he was a graduate of Wapello High School. He moved to Grinnell in 1935 and was employed with his uncle, Chet Williams, at the Pioneer Oil Co.
He was married to Grace Lucille Johnson in 1937.
Mr. Gauss was a veteran of World War II and served with the 3rd Army in Europe. He was a recipient of two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.
Following the war, he returned to Grinnell and was employed at the Grinnell Buick Garage and completed his career as a mechanic at Eisenman Motors.
Surviving are one son, Gordon of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; one stepdaughter, Marcelline McDonald; two sisters, Mary Ellen and Harriett, both of Burlington; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two stepsons, Roger and Gary.
An Eldred Gauss Memorial Fund has been established.
