OBITUARY

JOHN MITCHELL CHAMBERLAIN

John Mitchell Chamberlain was born near Cadiz, O., Sept. 25, 1848, and died March 26, 1917, at the age of 68 years and 6 months. He was the third son of John and Rosanna Chamberlain and the fourth child of a family of nine children, all of whom have preceded him in death except Mrs. Maggie Saults of Balfe, Neb., and Mrs. Mattie Wiley of Minneapolis, Minn.

He came with his parents to this county in 1849. The journey was made by rail to the Mississippi river and the remainder by wagon, there being no railroads at that time though central Iowa.

Mr. Chamberlain received his early education in the schools of Montezuma and as he grew up he assisted his father on the home farm until Feb. 21, 1902 when he moved to Washington township, having acquired for himself a valuable farm in that township.

On Dec. 28, 1882 Mr. Chamberlain was united in marriage with Miss Sarah E. Bryan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bedy Bryan. Five children were born to this union, Mrs. Sylvia Anna Temple of Grinnell, Chas. L. of Tucson, Ariz., William L. of Marshalltown and Lawrence and Clarence, twins, both of whom are at home on the farm. These, with four grandchildren and the widow are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father.

Funeral services were held at Montezuma at the home of Mrs. Margaret Bryan on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. George Blagg, and interment was made in the Masonic and I.O.O.F. cemetery.
