DEATH CLOSES USEFUL LIFE
The death Thursday April 28 at five o'clock p.m. of Andrew Haag has taken from life a man who spent the last seventeen years of his life in Grinnell. Here all who knew him recognized him as a quiet, modest gentleman, with a welcoming smile and a cordial word for all.
Andrew Haag was born at Appentahl, Rhine Bairn, Germany, Jan. 16, 1846, making him at his death 81 years, 3 mos. and 12 days old. With his brother Dave he came to America in 1863 at the age of seventeen, and made his home at Mansfield, Ohio, with his uncle Jake Roth.
Before coming to America he was confirmed in the Reformed Church April 17, 1859, at Elmstein, Germany, and has maintained his faith and kept his confirmation certificate during the sixty-eight years since.
A few years after coming to America he moved to Iowa and located on a farm in Iowa county near the Poweshiek line. Here on March 2, 1874, he was united in marriage with Eliza Gabriel who survives him after 53 years of happy married life.
To this union were born nine children, all of whom still live except one babe Elizabeth who died in infancy. In 1903 Mr. Haag and his family moved from the farm in Iowa County to a new home just east of Deep River now occupied by Will and Emaline Haag. In 1910 he moved to Grinnell and here has been the family home since.
Mr. Haag has been recognized as a man of upright character and strict integrity, courteous and generous, a neighbor to respect and a friend to cherish.
Mr. Haag had been in good health until the disease which took him away laid hold on him March 16, since which time he grew gradually worse until his death.
Besides his loving wife of over half a century, eight children survive him; Emaline, Will, Carrie, Lydia and Lenora, of Deep River, and Kathryn, Orrie and Pearl of Grinnell. There are also twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by his brother David, of Deep River, who crossed the ocean with him in 1863.
The funeral will be held at the home tomorrow, Saturday, at one o'clock conducted by Rev. Geo. Blagg, and burial will be in Golden Rod cemetery at Deep River.
