WEDNESDAY RITES CONDUCTED FOR JACK MAHLERWEIN

Jack Mahlerwein, 81, of Grinnell, died Monday at a local hospital following a month's illness.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Shireman, pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating. Organ music was provided by Mrs. Rhee Auman.

Pallbearers were Donald Murrow, Donald Thomas, Robert Gulling, Thurman Gaskill, C.H. Dimit, and J.C. Parrott. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery.

Born Aug. 12, 1881, in Alsace-Lorraine, he was the son of Jacob and Katherine Mahlerwein. At an early age he came to this country where he received his education in the public and night schools of the state of Virginia. Later, he moved to Grinnell where he made his home for the last 50 years.

On April 27, 1915, in Grinnell, he was united in marriage with Nellie Martino Hotka by the Rev. W.B. Wilson.

Survivors include his widow Nellie at the home in Grinnell, and two step-daughters--Mrs. Ward Murrow of Mitchellville and Mrs. Kenneth Adkins of Grinnell. Also surviving are five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Mahlerwein was a member of the First Baptist church and the Knights of Pythias. He had been employed as a shoe inspector at Grinnell Shoe Co., and as a fireman at the Iowa Southern Utilities light plant.
