Obituary dated Jan. 31, 1902

--Rufus W. Conger, for twenty-seven years a resident of Sheridan township, died at Gilman last Saturday morning aged nearly 64 years. Mr. Conger was born in Franklin county, N.Y., March 3, 1838; at the age of 20 he joined the M.E. church at Dickinson, N.Y.; when he was 23 years old he enlisted in Company C, Fifth Vermont volunteers; he received his discharge July 16, 1862, at the general hospital, Alexandria, Va.; he was married to Nancy Gale of Franklin county, N.Y., August 22, 1864; they removed to Missouri in 1865 and in 1868 returned to New York; they came to Iowa in 1869 and settled in Sheridan township, Poweshiek county. Here nine children were born to them, one dying in infancy; they moved to Gilman in 1896, residing there until death called him away. The funeral was conducted by Rev. R.F. Lavender of Newton, assisted by Rev. B.C. Barnes and Rev. C.L. Hammond.
