THELMA D. FISHER

Thelma D. Fisher, 79, of Newton, formerly of Grinnell, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Newton Healthcare.

A funeral will be held Friday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith officiating. Her family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials in her name may be left at the funeral home.

She was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Grinnell, the daughter of Dennis William and Ola Belle Conger Grovenburg. She grew up in Grinnell, graduating from Grinnell High School in 1950. She was united in marriage with William Lester Fisher on Jan. 6, 1952. She moved to Newton in 1955. She was a production worker with the Maytag Company for 19 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of UAW Local 997.

She is survived by her daughter Darlene Illingworth of Newton; her sons, Ronald Lee Fisher and William Lester Fisher Jr., both of Newton; 13 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; her brother Lloyd Keith Grovenburg of Oakland Acres; and her sisters, Shirley Lillie of Montezuma. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Steven Fisher; two sisters, Mildred Vulysteke and Helen Strand; and three brothers, Ernest, Dennis and Kenneth in infancy.
