HELEN M. STRAND

Helen M. Strand, 77, of Grinnell, formerly of Gilman, died Thursday, June 25, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service was conducted Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ken Wallace, pastor of the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ, officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud. Burial was in Chester Cemetery.

The daughter of Dennis and Ola Belle Conger Grovenburg, she was born July 8, 1920, in Grinnell where she was raised and received her education. She was married to Ralph O. Strand Dec. 24, 1939, in Grinnell. The couple farmed near Newburg, Gilman and Lynnville prior to living in the Rock Creek Lake area for 23 years.

Mrs. Strand moved to Gilman in 1987 and returned to Grinnell in 1996. She was employed by the United Food Store here for 25 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Janet Mommer of Gilman and Sherry Killion of LeGrand; three sisters, Mildred Vulysteke of Grinnell, Thelma Fisher of Newton and Shirley Lillie of Montezuma; two brothers, Dennis and Keith Grovenburg, both of Grinnell; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Ernest and Kenneth Grovenburg.
