NEWTON W. CESSNA 95, DIED SEPT. 10 IN CALIFORNIA

Newton William Cessna, a former resident of Grinnell, died on Sept.10 at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. C.M. Traver, in San Bernardino, Calif. Graveside services were held at the family plot in Mountain View cemetery. Mr. Cessna is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Traver, and Mrs. Francis C. Kellogg of LaJolla, Calif. A third daughter died in early childhood, and Mrs. Cessna passed to her eternal reward in 1934.

A native of Pennsylvania, Mr. Cessna was born on August 13, 1857. Nearly sixty years of his life were spent in Iowa, the last thirty-five in California. During a long period of residence in and near Grinnell he was engaged in farming and in business as a partner in the Grinnell Provision Co. He was also a director of the Merchants National Bank, treasurer of the Poweshiek County Mutual Insurance Company and an official of the First Methodist church. Since his retirement he has lived in California, pursuing his interests in public affairs, and in the care of roses and camelias. In spite of advanced years and declining strength he remained remarkably alertt and active to within a few days of his death, and he will be greatly missed by a host of friends and relatives.
