ELMER NELSON

Elmer L. Nelson, 83, died Tuesday, July 5, at Friendship Manor Care Centre.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dorie Hansen of the Sheridan United Methodist Church officiating. Organist will be Alice Renaud.

Pallbearers will be Chad Beck, Melvin Beck, Charles Carnahan, Jack Chedester, Jim May, Wes Sebetka and Charles Smith. Honorary bearers will be Ed Blinkinsop, Orlyn Blinkinsop, Robert May, Charles McLennon and Louis Winslow. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman.

He was born Nov. 24, 1911, in Marshall county, the son of Selmer and Jeanie Carroll Nelson. He received his education in the Gilman School District, in rural schools near his home, and at Chester Townshp High School. He then worked for area farmers.

He was married to Evelyn McLennon Chvala on Sept. 11, 1944, in Marshalltown. They farmed in Madison Township, and in 1949 purchased a farm in Sheridan Township.

Mr. Nelson farmed until his retirement in the mid-1970s and continued to live on the farm until his health required nursing care. He has been a resident of Friendship Manor since November 1993.

He was a member of the Sheridan United Mehtodist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Dale of Moorehead, Minn., Ronald of Sidney, Neb., and Kenneth of Malcom; two stepsons, Larry Chvala of Bena, Minn., and Richard Chvala of Moorehead; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Smith of Grinnell, Verna Dodge of Sacramento, Calif., and Helen Lippincott of Brooklyn; and one brother, Carroll "Kelly" Nelson of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Janet Kay; one son, Gaylon W., and two brothers in infancy.
