Uncle John Hays, one of the pioneers and one of the oldest citizens of this township, died at the residence of his son, William M. Hays, on Tuesday evening. He came from Mayland to Grinnell in 1854, and was the first citizen of Chester, who ever trod these prairies. He has been in feeble health all winter and has been looking forward joyously to the hour of his dissolution. The funeral services were to be held yesterday at one o'clock. A more extended notice will appear hereafter.

DIED.

HAYS.--In Chester Township, at the residence of his son, William Hays, on Tuesday, the 24th inst., John Hays, in the 75th year of his age.

The deceased came from Maryland to Grinnell in 1854, and two years later was the pioneer settler in Chester Township. He ever maintained the character and position of an upright Christian man, and as such was universally respected. He was one of the constituent members of the Baptist Church in Grinnell, and at his request his funeral service was conducted by Rev. T. Brande, assisted by Rev. Mr. White, and was attended by most of his friends and neighbors. He leaves three sons, who were all present at his funeral, and two daughters absent, who reside in Nebraska.
