Obituary dated July 12, 1912

JOHN A. HAYS

John A. Hays, the oldest son of John T. and Sarah Frame Hays, was born in Frederick county, Md., Dec. 19, 1836, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Putnam of Denver, Colo., June 25, 1912.

He was married in 1863 to Miss Carrie Maltby, who died about three years ago. He is survived by five children, three boys and two girls; one brother, J.B. Hays, of Olathe, Colo., and one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Hayes, of Franklin, Neb.

He came to Iowa with his father's family in 1854 and landed in Grinnell when the population amounted to 60.

He settled with the family in Chester township in 1858. It is said he broke the first prairie in Chester township.

He united with the Baptist church when a young man and remained a faithful member until his death.
