GRACE M. PORTER

Grace M. Porter was born Nov. 21, 1871, in Poweshiek county, Iowa and died at a Tama nursing home on Feb. 27, 1957. She had suffered strokes the previous Saturday and Monday. Prior to the first stroke, she had been enjoying good health.

Born Grace Malinda Bolen, she was the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Ann Thompson Bolen. She was reared on a farm in Sheridan township and attended Sheridan No. 5 school.

Following her marriage Nov. 15, 1891, to Clinton Heishman at her home in Sheridan, she lived on a farm near the Sheridan store for four years, then on a farm near Malcom for a number of years. She and her husband then retired to Grinnell where he died in the 1930's.

Later she married Arthur Porter of Grinnell, and they made their home in Des Moines where he was an auto salesman. Then they returned to Grinnell where Mr. Porter operated a garage for two years. Next they returned to Des Moines where Mr. Porter became ill and quit work. He died in 1939. Mrs. Porter remained in Des Moines until four years ago when she returned to Grinnell to make her home. She lived alone.

On Jan. 1, 1956, she moved to Tama and took an apartment in the Solemen Annex. Her brother Ed Bolen, also lived in the same building.

Mrs. Porter was a member of the Methodist church.

She is survived by a son, Forrest J. Heishman, Deep River, and five grandchildren: Dale and Dean Heishman, Deep River; Mrs. Ruth Chaplin and Mrs. Rebecca Heishman of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Jack Heishman of the U.S. Navy.

Also surviving are seven great grandchilldren: John, Michael, Colleen and Kent Chaplin, Los Angeles; and Patricia, Pamela and Linda Heishman, Newport.

Her brother, Ed Bolen of Tama, and a sister, Mrs. Richard (Doll) Wichman of Grinnell, also survive.

Preceding her in death were a son, Ray Heishman, in November, 1950; a daughter in infancy; a brother, William Bolen of Brooklyn, and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Gross.

Funeral services were held March 1 at Tama with the Rev. J.G. Speer officiating. Burial was at Ivy Hill cemetery at Malcom.
