MRS. JULIA PHILLIPS DIES IN NEWTON HOSPITAL

Many Grinnell friends were saddened Friday by the announcement of the death of Mrs. Julia Phillips, who was at one time a resident of Grinnell, and who passed away Thursday just before midnight at the Skiff hospital at Newton following an illness of nine years from stomach trouble and complications incident to old age.

Mrs. Phillips is probably better known at Kellogg, where she lived for almost forty years at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Artie M. Powers. Her last serious illness began three years ago while she was visiting Mrs. J.P. Ervin in Newton. She was taken back to Kellogg but gradually grew worse and a few days before her death was taken to the hospital.

Julia Beard was *born in Fulton, Illinois, 71 years ago. Soon after her marriage to Elwood Phillips she moved from Illinois, where she had served as a school teacher for a number of years, to Ohio, where she and her husband resided until they came west again and settled in Jasper county.

The Phillips family lived for many years on a farm near Kellogg and in more recent years Mrs. Phillips has lived in the town of Kellogg. Her husband died 24 years ago.

Mrs. Phillips leaves her three children, Frank M. Phillips who is engaged in educational work in Washington, D.C., and Clyde C. Phillips, of Des Moines and her daughter, Mrs. Artie Powers, of Kellogg. She also is survived by 21 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Two children, John H.Phillips, and Mrs. Maude Adams preceded her in death. The former died 24 years ago and Mrs. Adams died 15 years ago.

Since childhood Mrs. Phillips has been an active church worker and for many years has been associated with the Methodist Episcopal church. She was a kind mother and a helpful friend, and one whose life has been dedicated to the helping of others. She was a great reader and despite her advanced years was keenly interested in the current topics of the day.

Funeral services for Mrs. Phillips were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at he Methodist Episcopal church in Kellogg.

Burial was made in the Kellogg cemetery.
