DR. LILLIE BEARD BOWERS WAS BURIED HERE ON SATURDAY

The body of Dr. Lillie Beard Bowers, former Grinnell resident and a member of one of Grinnell's early families, was brought to Grinnell for burial in Hazelwood cemetery Saturday from Urbana, Ill., where she died on April 8, aged 94 years, one month and four days. Dr. Bowers broke her hip in a fall last January, but immediate cause of her death was a stroke. Graveside rites were conducted by Rev. Leland W. Mann.

Her brother, Fabian Beard of 223 South Main street, Janesville, Wis., came to attend the burial service. The only other survivor is a sister, Mrs. Rhoda Rand of Urbana, who is also in a serious condition as a result of injuries received in a fall.

Dr. Bowers was born March 4, 1859, on a farm near Alden, the daughter of David and Elizabeth Rose Beard. In 1882 she was married in Grinnell to Jesse B. Bowers. For a time they resided in Grinnell, where Mr. Bowers operated a dray line and later they lived on a farm in North Dakota.

Following the death of Mr. Bowers his widow, then 60 years old, studied chiropractic and practiced until she was 90 years old. She had also been a W.C.T.U. lecturer for a time. She was a member of the Presbyterian church.
