GRINNELL MAN IS MISSING AFTER DIVE

A Grinnell man is missing and presumed dead following an apparent scuba-diving accident off the California coast.

Cal Buck, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Buck of 1815 Manor Dr., Grinnell, was reported missing Wednesday afternoon when he failed to surface after a dive.

Buck was reported to have been diving with two companions off Carmel, Calif. He had been in California attending scuba-diving school.

Buck is a graduate of Grinnell High School and attended the University of Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. today at the first picnic area south of the campgrounds on the east side of Rock Creek Lake State Park. Dr. Dale J. Williams of Ottumwa, district superintendent of the United Methodist Church, will officiate. Music will be provided by Tristram Parslow. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Smith Funeral Home.

Should friends desire, memorials in Cal Buck's name may be left at the Smith Funeral Home.

The son of James W. and Jo Ann Iler Buck, he was born July 24, 1951, in Emmetsburg. He attended Emmetsburg public schools and was graduated from Grinnell High School in 1969. He attended Northwest Missouri State College and the University of Iowa.

He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1971 to 1973. He had recently completed his education at the P.D.I.C. School of Scuba Diving in Monterey, Calif. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Dan (Jadee) Blumenstock of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Jill R. Buck, a student at Iowa State University; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ollie M. Iler of Plover. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and his paternal grandparents.
