MARCUS SHEARER

A colorful Montezuma resident was laid to rest at Montezuma Monday afternoon. Marcus Shearer died suddenly Feb. 27 at age 75.

Marcus Allen Shearer was born July 7, 1917, at Montezuma, the son of Earl J. and Margaret Hutchinson-Shearer.

On Nov. 22, 1938, he married Pauline Gass in Missouri. They became parents of three children.

Shearer spent all his life in Montezuma with the exception of four years in the Marine Corps during World War II. As a youth, he was bookkeeper for Tom Scott Chevrolet and later Vannoy Chevrolet. For a number of years he and Mrs. Shearer owned and operated the Monte Cafe and Tap Room.

In recent years he took care of the books and mowed the grounds of the Masonic-IOOF Cemetery.

He was a member of the Lafayette Lodge No. 52 AF&AM, the Shrine, Blakeley-Stevens American Legion Post 169, the DAV, Grinnell Eagles and Elks Lodge in Oskaloosa.

An avid motorcyclist, Marcus Shearer was the oldest active member of ABATE.

Shearer was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Pauline; son Clarence E. (Sonny) and Phyllis Shearer, and Jean Ann Shearer and Jo and Carl Poe of Montezuma; seven grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Perry Shearer of Des Moines, and other relatives.

Masonic services were at Watts Funeral Home Monday afternoon by members of Masonic Lodge No. 52 and Robert Willett. The eulogy was by Carl Poe.

Honorary casket bearers were Wavern Briggs, Evan Garrett, Arlo VanHoever, Eugene Garrett, and Lyle Truman. Casket-bearers were Danny Oliveson, Leonard Busby, Raymond Gregory, Steve Harper, Kenneth Shultz and Melvin Peterson.

Graveside services were by American Legion Post 169.
