EARL STORY JR.

Earl "Shorty" Story Jr., 81, of Grinnell and formerly of Malcom died Thursday, Jan. 19, at home with his family by his side.

Funeral services for Earl Story Jr. will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Carol Myers officiating. Casket bearers include Derek Chase, Mark Golden, Matthew Golden, Philip Johnson, Eugene Whisenand and Robert Whisenand. Interment will be at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today (Monday) at the Smith Funeral Home; family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.

He was born on April 19, 1924, in Malcom, the son of Earl Butler Story Sr. and Martha Elizabeth Erickson. He was raised in Malcom and attended Malcom school.

He married Eva Mary Schafer on July 23, 1948, in Iowa City. The couple had six daughters; he had a son from his first marriage.

He worked with Parmley Plumbing and Heating until his health forced him to retire in 1983. In 2004, the couple sold their Malcom home and moved to Grinnell, where they resided with their daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Steve Pollock.

He was a member of the Malcom United Methodist Church. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, watching sports, playing card and dice games, and watching and feeding birds. His family remembers fishing on rainy days and watching boxing on Saturday nights while enjoying ice cream. He taught them many fundmentals of life and was considered a "jack of all trades."

He is survived by his wife; his daughters Tru Ann Chase of Talco, Texas, Donna Story of Richmond, Mo., June Golden of Holt, Mo., Robin of Grinnell, Angela Story of Brooklyn and Allison Lentz of Dunkerton, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ernest, Frederick and Donald Story; his sisters, Leota Story and Bernice Smith; and a grandson.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Earl Story Jr. Memoral Fund and will be used to benefit the Children's Miracle Network, Grinnell Regional Hospice and the Malcom United Methodist Church.
