ARTHUR HANSON SERVICES HELD

Arthur J. Hanson, 79, of rural Grinnell died Monday morning, June 3, at Friendship Manor, following an extended illness.

The son of Lars and Hannah Jenson Hanson, he was born May 7, 1895, at Kellogg. He was confirmed and baptized in the Lutheran church at Kellogg and received his education in the schools of Kellogg and Rock Creek Township. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a charter member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Grinnell and a member of the American Lutheran Church Men.

He was married to Della Garrett in Des Moines Feb. 21, 1923. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Rock Creek area until 1931 when they moved to their farm just south of Grinnell. Mrs. Hanson preceded him in death Sept. 4, 1959. He retired and moved to Friendship Manor in 1967.

Mr. Hanson is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Marie) Austin of rural Grinnell; six grandsons, David Austin of Des Moines, Kenneth Austin of Waukeegan, Ill., and Larry, Bruce, Dennis and James Austin, all of Grinnell; and three sisters, Mrs. Birdie Anderson of Grinnell, Mrs. Edythe Brooke of North English, and Mrs. Stella Bailey of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a granddaughter, Ann Marie Austin; a sister, Mrs. Carrie Vinall; a brother, Harold Hanson; and a twin sister, Edith, who died in infancy.

Funeral services for Mr. Hanson were held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home, with the Rev. Elmer C. Elzey, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Organist was Mrs. Leonard Pearce, and vocalist was Gordon Van Donselaar. Serving on the flower committee were Tena Hillman and Agnes Mikel. Pallbearers were Roger Bailey, Warren Bailey Jr., Raymond Koger, Leon Wilson, Ivan McDonough and Kenneth Osland.

Burial was in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
