MARIE C. AUSTIN

Marie C. Austin, 72, of Grinnell died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, a Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 23, at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Herb Knudten, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Organist was Teresa Ziegenmeyer and vocalist, Marlene Gritsch. Pallbearers were Bruce Campbell, Darlo Kelting, Doug Mikel, Ron Morrison, and Bernie and Bill Nagel. Honorary bearers were Virgil Stone, Bill Burk, Bill Campbell, Addison Jones, Allen Latcham, Harvey and Wilford Mikel, and Leo Schmitz. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Marie C. Austin Memorial Fund.

The daughter of Francois and Christina Boomgarden Charlier, she was born August 7, 1932, in Crescent City, Ill. She was baptized at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Crescent City in September of 1941 and later confirmed in May of 1946 at the Chapel of the Lutheran Children's Home in Muscatine, where she and her brothers lived for a time after the death of her mother. She moved to Grinnell in 1946 and was adopted by Arthur and Della Hanson. She was a 1950 graduate of Grinnell High School. She was married to Clyde Austin December 17, 1950, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grinnell. The couple farmed north of Grinnell until 1986 and then moved to Grinnell prior to moving to their present farm in 1989. She kept busy enjoying her family, doing handwork making afghans for family and friends, and gardening.

Survivors include her sons, David Austin, Larry Austin, Dennis Austin, and James Austin, all of Grinnell; Kenneth Austin of Orange Park, Fla., Bruce Austin of Casa Grande, Ariz.; three brothers, Frederick Charlier of Willis, Va., Wilbur Charlier of Minonk, Ill., Louis Charlier of Metamora, Ill.; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her adopted parents; her husband in 1996; one daughter, Ann Marie Austin in infancy; and one brother, Francis Charlier.
