FUNERAL SERVICES
FOR JOHN HOWIE
HELD IN MADISON(From The Brooklyn Chronicle)
Funeral services for John Howie, former resident of Brooklyn, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Orval Morgan, in Albia, Tuesday, Jan. 15, were held Thursday at the Madison Christian church north of Brooklyn. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Brooklyn.
Mr. Howie had lived away from Brooklyn about 20 years. He had visited here frequently and was well known both in town and in the Madison community.
Mr. Howie came to Brooklyn when a boy with his father's family from north of Davenport in Scott county. They settled in Madison township, owning for many years a farm one mile north and two miles east of the Madison Christian church. After his marriage, John Howie and family lived there for a number of years. They were active in affairs of the community. About 30 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Howie and two daughters moved to Brooklyn where Mr. Howie built the house where George Stone now lives. He was in the elevator business here, building one of the elevators now in use. He was interested in the city gas plants, and about 20 years ago moved to Hampton where he was in charge of the city gas plant and also installed several plants at towns throughout that part of Iowa.
Mrs. Howie died while they lived at Hampton and one daughter, Agnes, settled in Albia, where Mr. Howie has made his home since the death of his wife. Another daughter, Florence, preceded her father in death.
Mr. Howie was about 77 years old. He was a kind neighbor and friend, a successful business man and a man who through the years has been held in the highest regard by his friends here.
A minister from Des Moines, a former Hampton boy, who was a friend of Mr. Howie's daughter, Mrs. Morgan, conducted the funeral service last Thursday. A group of friends from Albia acted as pallbearers.
It was known here for some time that Mr. Howie was in poor health. His death marked the passing of another one of our early settlers and one who was one of the builders in the Madison community.
