RAYMOND LEE CLOSE

Raymond Lee Close, son of Jacob and Elizabeth Ackens Close, was born October 31, 1887, at Ladora and died at his home in Brooklyn April 27, 1964.

He grew up in the Ladora community where he attended rural schools.

He was married to Merle Mumby of Ladora and four children were born to the couple. He and his family moved to the Brooklyn community and farmed for a number of years. His wife died in May, 1936.

On June 12, 1939, he was married at Marengo to Lena Meeks of Brooklyn. Since that time the couple has lived in Brooklyn. Mr. Close worked as a hired hand and a tiller for many years until ill health forced his retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Close would have observed their silver wedding anniverary June 12 of this year.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Merle; ten brothers and sisters and one grandchild.

Surviving are his wife, Lena Close of Brooklyn and his four children: Mrs. Lester (Lillian) Gloe and Mrs. Herb (Myrtle) Bell, both of Lafayette, Calif., Lyle Close of Richmond, Calif. and Orie Close of Minneapolis, Minn. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Jessie McFadden of Ottumwa; three grandchildren and a step-daughter, Dorothy Meeks of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held at Bramer Funeral Home in Brooklyn April 30 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. G.H. Hulsebus, pastor of First United Presbyterian church officiating. Organist was Mrs. Ed Bartachek.

Interment was in Kent cemetery, north of Brooklyn, with Cliff Williamson, Ed Graham, Lester King, Howard Swain, William Smith and Will Ormiston serving as pallbearers. Flower attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hiner.
