MARY MARCUM

Mary Marie Bennington Marcum, 79, of Newburg died Tuesday, June 2, at St. Francis Manor.

Funeral services were conducted Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Wallace, pastor of the Newburg United Church of Christ, officiating. Organist was Alice Renaud, and pallbearers were Chad Adams; Barry, Kenneth and Victor Bennington; Duane Hannah; Rick Innis and Tom Peck.

Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Jasper County.

The daughter of William W. and Hester S. Root Reel, she was born June 3,1912, in Clarke County. She attended rural school.

She was married to Victor Adam Bennington March 23, 1928, in Gilman. Mr. Bennington died in 1962.

She was married to Harvey Marcum Nov. 1, 1969, in Truro.

She lived most of her life in Newburg where she raised her family. She drove a school bus for the Grinnell-Newburg School District from 1946 through 1978 and also worked at the canning factory in Gilman for many years.

She attended the Newburg United Church of Christ and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a former member of the Newburg Women's Fellowship.

Surviving are her husband; two children, Betty Adams of Newburg and LaVern Bennington of Searsboro; two stepchildren, Jack Marcum and Darlene Pickens, both of Grinnell; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Dorothy Reed of Des Moines and Elsie Green of Mitchellville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; two brothers, Ora and Russell Reel; and two sisters, Grace Husted and Nellie Troup.
