CLYDE O. SUMPTER

Clyde O. Sumpter, 76, of Grinnell died Thursday, Oct. 19, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with Brother Darren Wize of the Bible Missionary, Newton, officiating. Pallbearers were Lanny Brand; Chad, David, Denny and Randy Criswell; Myron Fraker; Mark Martin; Kevin Sumpter; and Glen and John Thompson.

Military rites were conducted by members of the Grinnell American Legion. Burial was in Westfield Cemetery.

He was the son of Duane and Alfa Leona Morris Sumpter and was born Aug. 20, 1924, in Unionville, Mo. He moved with his family to Corydon and received his education there. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the India, Burma and China offensive.

He was married to Ada Criswell Oct. 4, 1943, in Chariton, and the couple lived in Grinnell. Mr. Sumpter worked for many years as a mechanic for Hatcher Motors, Eisenman Motors and Johnson Motors. In 1980, he began working as a self-employed mechanic, and he retired in 1990.

He attended the Bible Missionary in Newton.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Steve of Lake Charles, La.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Don of Brooklyn and Ron of Chicago; and two sisters, Judy Wertz of Grinnell and Vicki Tish of Brooklyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Wayne; one brother, Jerry; and one sister, Donna *Nevins.

A Clyde O. Sumpter Memorial Fund has been established.
