MRS. SUMPTER RITES WEDNESDAY

Helen E. Sumpter, 64, of 715 Washington Ave., Grinnell, died of cancer early Sunday, Jan. 6, at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keith Briggs of the First Friends Church officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner, and burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Friends Church and left at the funeral home.

The daughter of Joseph and Mary Tomaskie Hunsaker, she was born May 6, 1920, at Sioux Falls, S.D. Her family moved to Green City, Mo., where she attended school.

She was married to Dwain Preston Sumpter on June 8, 1940, at Newton. They came to Grinnell where for the past 25 years Mrs. Sumpter had been employed at DeLong's as a supervisor.

She was a member of THEOS and the First Friends Church.

Survivors include her children, Judith Wertz, Donna Nevitt and Donald Sumpter of Grinnell, Victoria Tish of Brooklyn, and Ronald Sumpter of Schaumburg, Ill.; one step-son, Clyde Sumpter of Grinnell; 11 grandchildren; one step-grandson; and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dwain, in 1974; one step-son, Jerry Sumpter; one step-grandson; and one sister, Betty Lou, who died in infancy.
