LAST RITES SAID FOR LILA SMITH

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at the Smith Funeral Home for Mrs. Lila Smith, 85, widow of Stephen G. Smith of 327 6th Ave., who died suddenly late Thursday afternoon at Grinnell General Hospital.

The Rev. Hugh A. Shiveley, minister of the First Baptist Church, officiated at the services. Organist was James Severe.

Pallbearers were Richard Pilgrim, Jim Pilgrim, Ben Holcomb, Guy Slaven, Floyd Sharp and Kenneth Cooper.

Flower bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Brubaker, Miss Margaret McCann, and Mrs. William Gossen.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Nathaniel and Jennie Dickerson Cooper, Mrs. Smith was born in Grinnell on April 16, 1885.

On June 26, 1907, she was married to Stephen G. Smith in Grinnell and to this marriage was born one son, Laverne E. Smith of Grinnell.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church and had taken an active part in church affairs. She had been a member of the Brande Bible Class and the Isabelle Brande Guild at the church. She also was a 6-year member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 119 of Grinnell and was Past Noble Grand of the Lodge.

Survivors include a son, Laverne; three sisters--Mrs. Crayton (Ethel) Holcomb and Mrs. Morey (Nell) Pilgrim, both of Grinnell, and Mrs. Walter (Viola) Root of LaSalle, Mich.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband on June 4, 1962, and by five brothers and sisters--Claire Cooper, Fred Cooper, Mae Cooper, Mrs. Ina Riley and Mrs. Bernice Vinall.
