Mary Agnes Byers

Agnes was the daughter of Robert Henry and Emma Fisher Pratt Stanley, and was born north of Montezuma on August 17, 1907. She attended the Montezuma schools graduating with the Class of 1927 at Montezuma High School.

Agnes was married to Perry J. Byers on December 18, 1934 at Montezuma and the couple made their home on farms in the Montezuma area, later living in Montezuma. While there she was a member of the Christian Church and the Rebekah’s. In 1942 they came to Grinnell to make their home. She performed baby sitting duties for many Grinnell families and for 15 years was the baby sitter on Sunday mornings at the Grinnell United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Perry; her son, Jack; her daughter, Kathryn Sage, all of Grinnell; her 6 grandchildren: Gregory Scott Webb, Connie Byers, Mark Byers, David Byers, Brenda Sage and Debra Sage; as well as 2 great grandchildren: Ashley and Douglas Byers. Also surviving is a sister and brothers: Ruth Stanley of Searsboro; and Alvah W. Stanley of Loveland, Colorado.

Agnes died Saturday morning, March 22, 1968 at Grinnell General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Lou Webb on August 15, 1974; twin grandsons, Ronald Eldon and Raymond Allen Sage; and her mother in 1921 and father in 1948.
