Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, June 21, at the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, for Edwin L. Montgomery, 87, of Brooklyn, who died Wednesday evening, June 8, 1997, in the Brookhaven Nursing Home, Brooklyn.

The Revs. Ron Van Heukelom and Aaron Koskamp officiated. The organist was Mrs. Anedra Sherwood. Flower attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Blair Hall and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Matters. Honorary casketbearers were Lyle Nesselroad, Charles Andes, Lawrence Kinnamon, Daryl Dyer, Jack Crosson and Ross Wylie. Casketbearers were Dale Hawkins, Ed Kline, Maynard Saylor, Larry Ford, Kyle Montgomery and Marvin Korns. Interment was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with military rites conducted by members of Francis Gallagher American Legion Post #294.

Edwin Landes Montgomery, son of James and Mary Crawford Montgomery, was born April 16, 1910, at Broolkyn. He received his education in the Brooklyn School, graduating from high school in 1928, and then attended the University of Iowa. He served with the U.S. Navy during WWII.

On Oct. 2, 1931, Ed was married to Elizabeth H. Ringena in Papillion, Neb. He operated the Phillips 66 gas station in Brooklyn for 29 1/2 years. In 1960, he opened E.L. Montgomery Real Estate & Insurance, and in 1972, his son-in-law, Jack Hall, joined him in operating Montgomery Insurance & Real Estate. Montgomery retired in 1981.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Francis Gallagher American Legion Post #294, Corinthian Lodge #174 AF & AM, Brooklyn Kiwanis Club, and Brooklyn-Victor Country Club. He was a former member of the IOOF Lodge, Lions Club, and was original stockholder and member of the Board of Directors of Brookhaven Nursing Home. He served on the city council for 20 years.

Montgomery, was peceded in death by his parents; his wife, who died Feb. 20, 1982; five sisters and four brothers.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Hall and her husband, Jack, of Brooklyn, and Martha Montgomery of Bellevue; three grandchildren, Lori Hall, Stephen Hall and his wife, Teresa, and Darren Hall and his wife, Jane; and one great-grandson, Harley D. Hall.

A memorial fund has been established and may be left with the Nevenhoven Funeral Home.
