Shirley E. Puls, 86, of Grinnell died Wednesday April 7, 2004, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Friday, April 9, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Herb Knudten, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Casket bearers were Arnold Baetsle, Roger Beeler, Larry Ellis, Adam Puls, Mel Rummelhart and Dale Schultz. Interment was in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Malcom. Memorials may be made to American Alzheimer's Association or Grinnell Eagles Lodge.

He was born Aug. 5, 1917, near Malcom to Elmer Lewis and Sylvia Baustian Puls. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. He was married on May 17, 1941, to Helen M. Skidmore in Bethany, Mo. They farmed in Sheridan Township northeast of Grinnell until the mid 1950s when they moved to Grinnell where he worked as a foreman at the former Miracle Recreation Company for 24 years. He was a charter member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge which he served as president and trustee, and also was involved in various offices of the Iowa Eagles Association.

He is survived by one daughter, Marquerite Beeler and one son, Dennis Puls, both of Grinnell; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother Wayne Puls of Grinnell and one sister, Ruth Hasselbrink, also of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents; one brother, Robert Puls and two sisters, Theresa Schultz and Norma Griffin.
