CARTER MANLY

Widespread regret was caused by the announcement of the death last Monday night of Carter Manly, called in the very prime of life. Carter had lived practically all his life in Grinnell. He was born in Marshalltown, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Manly, but when he was five years old the family moved to Grinnell and his boyhood and early manhood days were spent here. He attended the city schools and graduated from high school in the class of 1897. His first active business career was in West Union where for ten years he was engaged in the clothing business. Five years after going to West Union he was united in marriage on October 20, 1908 to Miss Ethel Mart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Mart of this city, whom he had known during his high school days.

After returning to Grinnell he was employed for some time by the McMurray & Rinefort, now the McMurray Bros. clothing store and later entered the employ of G.S. Stites in the Rex cigar store, where he had worked for the past five years.

He was kindly of nature, obliging, a faithful and trusted employe and a good friend. Those who knew him only slightly will miss his cheery word and friendly smile.

He is survived by his devoted wife, his parents, and two brothers, Charles and John Manly.

Rev. E.W. Cross conducted funeral services Wednesday afternoon from the home. Interment was in Hazelwood and the Masons were in charge of the services at the grave. Pall bearers were H.I. Yeager, F.L. Abel, E.M. Neely, Roy Terrill, Ross Coutts and H.F. McMurray.
