SAMUEL POOLEY, 96, DIES THIS MORNING; WED. SERVICES

A prominent Grinnell resident for many years, Samuel John Pooley, 96, died this morning (Monday) at the Good Samaritan Home in Mason City, where he had resided for the past several years.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the First Congregational church here, where he had been a member since his college days. Private burial will be held at 10 a.m. that same day in Hazelwood cemetery. At the same time, private burial will be given the ashes of his late wife, Edna Lyon Pooley.

Born in Plymouth, England, on Nov. 10, 1868, he and his two sisters were brought to this country at an early age by their widowed mother. He grew to manhood and was educated in the schools of Earlville and Manchester, Iowa.

He came to Grinnell in the fall of 1889 as a freshman at Grinnell College, and remained a resident until, in 1961, advanced age required him to move into the Good Samaritan Home with his wife, Edna L. Pooley.

In college, he was a track and football star, playing on the first team to play an intercollegiate football game west of the Mississippi River. He retained his strong interest in sports and in the college, serving for many years as an alumni trustee.

He was actively identified with the Grinnell business community for over 50 years as president of the Grinnell Savings Bank, in the insurance and investments business, as an examiner for the Iowa State Banking Department, an employee of the Public Works Administation, and from the early 1940's until his retirement in 1956 as an accountant at the Grinnell Shoe Co.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Patten Pooley; a daughter, Elizabeth; a son, Richard; and by his second wife, Edna Lyon Pooley.

Survivors include two sons, Samuel R. of Des Moines, and John W. of Duluth, Minn.; three grandchildren, Samuel G. Pooley of Lincoln, Ill., Martha Pooley of Duluth and Mrs. Robert F. Bennett of San Francisco, Calif.; and one great grandchild, John Scott Bennett.
