The Grinnell Herald; July 5, 1898

--Samuel Dunlap was born in Tyrone, Huntington county, Pa., in 1815, and died at Forest Home, where he was visiting friends, July 1, 1898, having passed 83 years of life. In 1836 he was married to Miss Rachel Woomer. To this union eleven children were born, of whom nine still live, their homes being scattered from Pennsylvania to Oregon. Mr. Dunlap had been a resident of Poweshiek thirty years and of Grinnell for nine years. At the time of his death he was visiting at the home of his son near Forest Home, Iowa. The day after his arrival there he was taken suddenly with a paralytic stroke and was almost utterly helpless until death released him, yet manifesting great faith and cheerfulness through all. From early manhood he had been a devout Christian, uniting with the M.E. church about sixty years ago. How truly we can say, "The voice we loved is stilled in the prayer meetings and class meetings; no more will we hear him sing the beautiful hymns he loved so well, for father has gone home." The remains were brought to Grinnell, Saturday, the funeral being conducted by Rev. J.E. Corley of the Methodist church. The beautiful hymn "Asleep in Jesus," was appropriately rendered by a choir consisting of Mrs. George Spooner, Miss Lily Benson, and Messrs. Baird and Gardner, and the remains were laid to rest in Hazelwood.
