MRS. BERTHA SCHULTZ IS DEAD

Funeral Services For Honored Woman of This Community Were Held Feb. 8.

HAD LIVED MANY YEARS ON FARM EAST OF TOWN.

Services Were In Charge of Pastor Geo. F. Dirks--Burial in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Schultz were held on the afternoon of Feb. 8th, with Pastor Geo. F. Dirks in charge. Burial was made on the family lot on the Trinity Lutheran cemetery. The bearers were Otto and Henry Schultz, Albert Hanssen, Henry Ahrens, Chas. Appleby, and Chas. Rohr. In spite of the extreme cold weather many relatives and friends were present.

Bertha Augusta Schutt was born in Hinterpommern, Germany, Sept. 8th, 1852. When two years old she came to this country with her parents who first settled at Galesburg, Ia., but later on took residence in Jasper County, where Bertha with her three brothers and two sisters grew to womanhood.

At the age of twenty-two years she was united in marriage with Carl A. Schultz of Grinnell, a farmer by occupation. The farm, east of Grinnell, on to which the couple moved proved to be their place of residence ever afterward. Eight children were born to their union, of which seven are still living, Harry having been summoned hence already when but a mere lad of ten.

Mrs. Schultz was a sincere Christian woman. She was baptized in infancy and confirmed in maidenhood in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, and after her marriage was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran of Malcom township. Though it was impossible for her to attend public worship in later years because of the infirmities of age, she nurtured her inner life as best she could through private devotions. She was willing and prepared to meet her Lord.

Mrs. Schultz was an industrious and a hardworking woman, devoted to her home and family, which maternal effection was not without response at the hands of the children. Some fourteen years ago already she suffered the loss of her husband, and for the past twelve years she had been cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Bradley, which care naturally brought added burdens to her home life, especially during recent years when her mother's health began to fail.

The deceased attained the age of seventy-six years, four months and twenty-eight days. Her death was brought on by a stroke which she suffered on Jan. 13. Previous to this, however, she had been ailing much because of indigestion. During the last week of her illness she was under nurse's care, but her life's course was run and loving hands could not retain her. At about four o'clock on the morning of Feb. 6, the same day on which Harry, her only deceased child, had passed on, she most peacefully went to her reward.

She is survived by her seven children: Martin and Andy Schultz of Malcom township, Mrs. Della Lidtka of New Sharon, Mrs. Carrie Ahrens of Grinnell, Mrs. Nellie Bradley of Malcom township, Mrs. Hattie Eichhorn and Mrs. Viola Hixson of Des Moines; two brothers, Ernest Schutt of Sully, Ia. and John Schutt of Knoxville, Mo.; thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
