CARL A. SCHULTZ KILLED BY FALL

Body of Prosperous Farmer Living East of Town Found at Foot of Ladder in Barn.

NECK WAS BROKEN; DEATH INSTANTANEOUS

Had Climed Into Mow to Throw Down Hay and Evidently Lost His Balance.

Carl A. Schultz, a prosperous farmer living five miles east of Grinnell, was found dead this morning at the foot of the ladder leading into the hayloft of his barn. The discovery was made by his wife when she came to the barn to look after her husband. Mr. Schultz' neck had been broken and death had evidently been instantaneous. He had been dead for several hours when the body was discovered.

Coroner O.F. Parish was summoned and went out at once, but death was so evidently due to an accident that he did not impanel a jury.

Mr. Schultz had not been feeling well for three days. Last night he did not reach home until late. Mrs. Schultz went out when she heard him and tried to induce him to come in and he said that he would do so as soon as he had fed his horses. Evidently he climbed the ladder into the haymow, threw down the hay and probably lost his balance and fell as he started to descend.

Mr. Schultz lived in this community for many years and has been a prosperous and energetic farmer. It will be remembered that he had a narrow escape from death last summer (when?) the automobile in which he, his daughter and H.C. Armstrong were riding went off a bridge over the railroad track near Oskaloosa and rolled to the bottom of the grade. He is survived by his wife and seven children.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 o'clock on Thursday morning from the German church north of Malcom. The Rev. Mr. Reinsch will conduct the services. Mr. Schultz was aged 60 years and 13 days.
