OBITUARY

Henry Theodore Schultz was born March 19, 1832, at Richtenberg, Province of Pommerania, Kingdom of Prussia. Here, by baptism in his infancy, as the rule of the Lutheran church prescribes, he was taken into God's covenant. Here he spent his boyhood days, and renewed his baptismal vows in confirmation. When he had grown up, in 1854, his family emigrated to America, while he had to stay and serve his time in the Prussian army.

In 1857 he joined his family at Princeton, Ill., and was soon married to Marie Johanna *Rheberg, who survives him. This union was blessed with nine children, of whom one died, the rest having grown up and most of them are living in this vicinity. They are Mrs. Jos. F. Eisele, Mrs. Andrew Erickson, Gust Schultz, Chris. Schultz, John Schultz, Otto Schultz, Henry Schultz and Mrs. Henry Baltisberger.

This married life was very happy, although he had a hard struggle from the beginning, and having more than the average share of sickness, the love between him and his wife, the love and respect of his children which was his to the end, made his life a rich and happy one. He will not be forgotten as a loving husband, as a just and kind father who strove to bring up his children so as to become good citizens and God fearing men and women. Nor will he be forgotten as a kind and helpful neighbor. He came to Sheridan township in 1859 where he lived until three years ago when he and his wife moved to Malcom. He was one of the organizers of the Lutheran church in the township and was a regular attendant at Lutheran services in town as far as his health, which in later years was precarious, permitted.

About six years ago he was in great danger of life, having to submit to an operation, but the prayers of his family prevailed and he was spared until now. Since about Christmas he had been ailing and about five weeks ago was compelled to take to his bed with neuralgia, which caused him great pain, and a complication of other troubles. Four weeks ago he underwent another painful operation that of having a tumor removed from the upper cavity of the mouth. He bore his suffering with Christian fortitude, submitting to the will of God. His death, though expected, caused a great shock to his family and friends. He was taken with a chill on Tuesday evening from which he rallied only to succumb to it when it was repeated on Wednesday morning. At 10 o'clcock that morning he breathed his last, at the age of 68 years, 2 months and 11 days.

We sincerely hope that he has found that mercy with God which we as sinners all need, and that he has reached the goal of pilgrimage, the Father's home. May we, by God's grace, in the Lord's appointed time, also come to that home.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, which was very largely attended by loving and sympathizing friends, which were conducted by Rev. Reinsch, and at the grave the Odd Fellows had charge of the exercises, he being a member of that order and belonged to the Brooklyn lodge, and a number of that lodge came up in a body to perform the last sad rites of their beloved brother, being assisted by the members of the Malcom lodge.

To the bereaved wife, children and friends is extended the heartfelt sympathy of this whole community in the hours of their sorrow and trouble.

The pall bearers were Wm Dosdale, John Schmidt, John W. Jones, A.S. Walters, Henry Schneckloth and Jos. Klaus.

Relatives from abroad were Gust Schultz, J.F. Schultz, wife and son, John Becker and wife, and Jno Heckner, of Princeton, Ill.; L.F. Schultz and wife, of Reasnor, Iowa; Andrew Erickson and wife, of Cedar Falls; Charley Miller and wife, and Charley Mahlin and wife, of Grinnell, John Schultz and wife, of Marshalltown; John Ahrens and wife, Newburg.

Mrs. Mary Schultz and children desire to extend their heartfelt thanks for the kind deeds and sympathy extended to them during the illness of their husband and father.
