LAST SERVICES ARE HELD FOR MRS. MARY ANN HOWARD

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ann Howard, wife of P.S. Howard, were held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Smith Home for Funerals, conducted by Rev. W.B. Wilson of Newburg. Burial was in the Hickory Grove United Brethren cemetery.

The familiar hymns, "Asleep In Jesus" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" were sung by a quartet composed of Virgil Palmer, John Koger, Betty Mason and Verna Burroughs. Pall bearers were Wm. Esler, George Rasp, George Mason, Charles Newcomer, Roy Walker and George Palmer.

Mrs. Peter S. Howard, whose maiden name was Mary Ann Moninger, was born at Deerlick, Pennsylvania, February 15, 1855, and passed away in Grinnell, Wednesday, June 2, 1937, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 17 days.

On the 20th of January, 1873, she was married to Oliver Mankey at Nineveh, Pennsylvania. There were two sons, Harley and William, and five daughters, Estella, Edna, Bertha, Christine and Maude, born to this home.

In 1885 the family moved to Jasper county, Iowa, making their home on the George Hoffman farm, now known as the Harve Breeden place, where Mr. Mankey died eight years later.

On May 20, 1896, she was married to Peter S. Howard, and she and Mr. Howard have since lived continuously in Newburg where Mr. Howard has been the M. & St. L. agent.

Early in life she united with the Presbyterian church, but after coming to Iowa she became a member of the Newburg Church of God. During her active years she took a live interest in all the work of the church, and in community affairs, often walking to the school house west of town on Sunday afternoons to attend the meetings of the Congregational church, after attending her own church in the morning.

Her life interests centered in her home, her church and her friends, and on all these her quiet, kindly influence has made itself deeply felt. For over a half century she has filled a worthy place in the Newburg community, and has won the sincere esteem of all.

She is survived by her husband, a son, Harley Mankey of East Middlebury, Vermont, and three daughters, Mrs. Bertha Benny of St. Louis, Mrs. Christine Mayo of Mason City, and Mrs. Maude Beaty of Newburg. There are also twenty grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were: From Mason City, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Mayo, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Sage and Mr. and Mrs. M. Tagoson and son. From St. Louis, Mrs. Bertha Benny, Mrs. Lawrence Withers and two daughters. From Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Phillips and son, Raymond, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Phillips. From Garwin, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Weatherly. From Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Phillips and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Phillips. From Martinsburg, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Howard. From Ackley, Trace Howard. From Brooklyn, Mrs. Philip Walker and son.
