OLIVER CARPENTER

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, June 22, at Liscomb Cemetery for Oliver Carpenter, 82, of Camarillo, Calif., a native of Malcom.

Mr. Carpenter died Nov. 18, 1993, in Sepulveda, Calif.

He was born Nov. 9, 1911, near Malcom and graduated from Grinnell High School. He attended Grinnell College where he held the college pole vault record for many years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and received various combat medals, including the Bronze Star.

He was married to Viola "Peg" Boyd Jan. 11, 1934, in Marshalltown. They lived in Liscomb where they owned and operated a gas station. They later moved to Colorado and in 1964 moved to California.

Surviving are his wife, Viola; two daughters, Barbara Burge of Newbury Park, Calif., and Carolyn Carpenter of Berthoud, Colo.; one sister, Ruth Gnau-Peterson of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, James of Commerce City, Colo.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Labrant-Smith, and two brothers, J. David and Donovan.
