RAYMOND MITCHELL

Raymond A. "Shorty" Mitchell, 70, of Lake Ponderosa died Jan. 27, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma, with the Rev. George Salnave of the First Presbyterian Church of Montezuma officiating. Pallbearers were Jim Snyder, Darrell Hull, Raymond Williams, Dave Kester, Floyd Brown and Marion Onthank. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Family Center at Montezuma and sent in care of the Watts Funeral Home.

The son of Elmer and Grace Onthank Mitchell, he was born Nov. 1, 1918, at Lyle, Minn. He attended Lynn Grove School until he began farming.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was married to Melba Hull May 18, 1944. She died in 1953. He was married to Laura Norris June 25, 1954, at Grinnell, and they lived on the farm until moving to Lake Ponderosa following Mr. Mitchell's retirement six years ago. His second wife died in 1987.

Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Blakley-Stevens American Legion Post in Montezuma and the Lake Ponderosa Association.

He is survived by one son, Mike of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Joellen Mitchell of Milwaukee, Wis.; two grandchildren; and one sister, Viola Brown of Moline, Ill.
