CLAUDE CARTER PASSES AWAY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Sad news has reached Grinnell of the death of Franklin Claude Carter, former Grinnell boy and high school football and basketball star who passed away in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 30, following an operation for ulcers of the stomach. The body is being taken to Utica, N.Y., for burial at the home of his bride of two months.

Claude was born in Piney Creek, North Carolina, March 9, 1900, the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Carter. He came to Grinnell with his parents in 1901. He attended Grinnell schools and grew to manhood here. He graduated from Grinnell high school in 1920 and attended Grinnell College for one year. He was prominent in high school and college athletics during his student days.

For the past ten years he had been employed as district sales manager for the Maytag Co. of Newton and had been very successful in his work.

He was married Sept. 3 of this year to Miss Catherine Gorman, of Utica, N.Y. In addition to his bride he is survived by his mother, Mrs. C.E. Carter of Riverside, Calif., five brothers, John C. of Grinnell, W.J. of Boston, Mass., G.B. of Chillicothe, Ohio, Lieutenant W.V. of Marsh Field, Riverside, Calif., and E.S. of Los Angeles; also by one sister, Mrs. Raymond Pilgrim of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his father, who died three years ago, and a sister, Mrs. George P. Kelly, who died in 1914.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge of Utica, N.Y.
